Public aid and government assistance from Florida DCF.
Find how to get government assistance in Florida from DCF and the government. The Department of Children and Families – ACCESS Florida Program has several resources that will help low income families, seniors and the disabled. Get help from public assistance including SNAP Food Stamps, Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA), Medicaid and Senior Citizen programs among others. Food stamps, WIC, and public aid programs for free or low cost groceries
Florida Food Assistance Program – Low income individuals can get assistance with buying healthy food, groceries, Ensure, baby formula and more. The main resources from the Department of Children and Families for low income households is SNAP food stamps as well as WIC for new parents, including single moms, with children. Applications for food stamp EBT Cards or on the ACCESS Florida portal.
The amount of public as well cash assistance provided on an EBT card to pay for your groceries and other items will depend on your total household income as well as the number of people in your family. Your income and basic living expenses as well as other eligibility rules will be factored into the amount of free groceries and food that is offered.
SNAP food stamps in Florida are intended to help pay for some of the household expenses. A number of different types of foods can be purchased using assistance and vouchers from the state of Florida. Women, Infant, Child (WIC) is another federal government funded program for lower income Women, Infants, and Children. It provides free baby or infant formula as well as medical care for pregnancy. The Florida WIC program provides the following resources at no cost to qualified individuals and families. Access healthy foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition education and counseling, as well as referrals from WIC for health care and medical services from the ACCESS Florida DCF program.
- Florida KidCare can offer free or low cost public health insurance coverage for children from birth through age 18, even if the parent is employed. There are four main components of the program as indicated below.
- Medikids covers children age 1 through 4.
- Healthy Kids if for children who are aged 5 through 18.
- Another wide ranging public resource is Children’s Medical Services, which is for Florida children birth through 18 who have special health care needs.
- WIC vouchers are often combined with SNAP food stamps in Florida.
- Medicaid is also offered. This is for children birth through 18. A child who has other health or dental insurance may still qualify for Medicaid.
Florida short term cash assistance benefits from DCF
Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) in Florida can offer free government grants and cash assistance to the needy and low income. The resources are focused on families with children under the age of 19 that also meet the income guidelines and asset requirements that have been put into place by the state. This cash assistance benefit is the state of Florida TANF program.
The cash program, formerly know as welfare, is really focused on helping lower income families and people on a limited income (seniors, disabled, etc.) become self-supporting and pay for their bills and expenses while allowing children to remain in their own homes. In addition to offering cash to families with children, pregnant women and single mothers in Florida may also qualify for the TCA program which is mentioned below or food stamps. TCA – Relative Caregiver Program – If you are taking care of a child but are not their parent, then this program provides a monthly cash disbursement to relatives who meet eligibility rules. For example grandparents, uncles, aunts, and other relatives who have custody of a child under age 18 who has been court ordered as a dependent may qualify for public assistance, with details on the ACCESS Florida website.
The monthly cash assistance amount provided to caregivers is more than what is provided from the Temporary Cash Assistance for one child, but the amount paid out is less than the amount paid for a child in the foster care program.
Senior citizens and the disabled may qualify for cash assistance from the Optional State Supplementation. This Florida resource can offer a monthly cash payments to disabled or indigent elderly individuals who live in special non-institutional, residential living facilities, including adult family care homes, assisted living facilities, or mental health residential treatment hospitals and facilities. The supplemental program provides a monthly check that will be paid towards supplementing the individual’s income.
Telephone bills, free phone from DCF and money for bills. Receive a free or low cost cell phone or land line in Florida from the Link-Up and Lifeline Assistance Program. This national program is also offered in Florida, and was designed to ensure that all residents of Florida, regardless of their income, have access to telephone service and some type of phone connections in their homes. The Department of Veterans’ Affairs is the main government affiliated organization that helps the over one million veterans in the state of Florida. Their immediate family members can also receive assistance. A number of public assistance programs, job placement, tax assistance, grants, and educational opportunities are provided to qualified veterans and military member. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program provides grants and public money to local governments as well as non-profit agencies in Florida so that they can assist low-income families with paying for home cooling bills and any heat expenses. The government funded utility bill program provides cash grants directly to local offices in your town and county. All applications and funding is run at the local level. Emergency Financial Assistance Program (EFAHP) – This program was created by Florida to try to help prevent homelessness. Money and grants can be distributed to pay a wide range of housing expenses that could cause homelessness. For example, money may be offered for rent, mortgage payments, or energy bills. The bottom line is that funding is offered for both homeowners and renters.
Refugee Services help entrants, immigrants, and refugees in Florida access information and financial assistance they need, and also become self-sufficient. Refugee Services can assist newly-arrived eligible clients in acquiring job skills, get pubic aid, obtaining employment, learning English, career counseling, and overcoming legal or medical difficulties. The state of Florida works with over 60 community provider contracts and non-profits, and the state provide grants, cash and medical bill assistance for at most eight months.
Public health and medical care services in Florida
Free or low cost health care coverage can be provided by Florida Medicaid. The federal government program, with details on ACCESS Florida, provides Medical coverage to low income families and individuals and can help people save significantly on their bills. It is a free health insurance plan for the poor, disabled and low-income in FL.
The state of Florida as well as the federal government share the costs of paying for the Medicaid program. Services are administered by the Agency for Health Care Administration. Additional DCF social services
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity offers programs to help people find a job, get a car for work, or locate free gasoline. Employers can also take advantage of resources to find qualified candidates. Among other services they run a One-Stop Career Center that can help you with your job search. Financial assistance for child care is provided by the state from resources such as the Florida School Readiness Program. The state will subsidize your costs so that the parents can either attend attend job training, work at their current job, or enroll into an education service or class. Assistance Programs Sarasota County
Find a listing of charities and churches, as well as government organizations, that can help the low income in Sarasota County. Find help for rent, utility bills, and other financial assistance
The Salvation Army Sarasota County as well as Venice or North Port – This non-profit from time to time will be able to provide limited financial assistance. They may have funds they can distribute to people with children to help them pay rent. In addition, some funding may be available to help pay a mortgage, water or utility bills. Applicants must show the ability to make future payments, as this is not a charity program.
The Salvation Army has multiple branches in Sarasota Florida. The Salvation Army centers also offer other support, such as basic needs (food, clothing), holiday meals, gifts, back to school supply giveaways and housing. Catholic Charities may also have limited funding for people who have an eviction notice, or who may be behind on a mortgage payment. Call (941) 244-9490. The funds are meant to be a short term solution and once again is not a charity program. A number of other resources may be available for the low income, including transitional housing, food, and medications. The Catholic Charity organization and their partners do what they can to help those in Sarasota who are struggling, regardless of their religion. Caritas provides financial help up to once per year with utility bills. Qualified applicants can receive assistance with paying utility bills such as electric, cooling, water, and more. 1651 22nd St .Sarasota Florida.
The local community action agency is the Sarasota County Health & Human Services. This non-profit agency both runs some of its own programs, and can refer low income families and individuals to other services. For example, their Community Services Block Grant funding is subbed to The Salvation Army at 954-4673, Weatherization services are through the Manatee County Community Action Agency ((941) 827-2887).
The non-profit also helps with long term stability. Whether it is part time employment for retirees or information on budgeting counseling or job training, help is offered. The agency recommends that people dial 211 to learn about these and other programs.
The Sarasota Social Services can provide extensive amounts of aid. The following programs are run under the GOAL name, which can offer assistance to families who are experiencing short term financial challenges. Trinity Presbyterian Church is located in South Sarasota County. This Outreach Ministry can help those in need. Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Sarasota runs a program known as Building Strong Families. This is aimed at preventing homelessness. Some of what may be offered includes counseling, free legal assistance, financial management, and short term rent/financial aid and food assistance. Veterans are a focus too as part of Operation Military Assistance Program.
JFCS has other services as well. One is a free food pantry. Or senior and disabled caregivers can get help, including respite, transportation and information on where to turn to for assistance. St. Jude’s Catholic Church may have emergency assistance for paying utilities. This can include water, natural gas, or electric bills. Rent help may be an option too, though it is limited. 941-955-3934.
Area Agency on Aging can help seniors apply for the Emergency Home Energy Assistance Program. It is financial aid for home-energy emergencies to qualified, low-income households in Sarasota County with at least one person 60 years of age or older. It can even provide other support such as free fans, repairs of heating/cooling equipment, blankets, and utility disconnection prevention.
The Agency on Aging also helps seniors in other ways. There are tips on how to make retirement savings last, information on enrolling into Medicare, and even SSI grants or loan programs for financial needs. A triage/referral service is available from the United Way of Manasota. They can help qualified residents learn about government benefits. This can include food stamps, section 8 housing vouchers, TANF, and health care resources such as Medicaid. Low income housing assistance may be available for a short period of time. Some of the options include transitional housing or emergency homeless shelters. Other government programs, such as section 8, may be available but often have a waiting list. Englewood Helping Hand is a social services agency that provides short-term financial assistance to Englewood residents in need of help. Aid is offered for people including residents of Placida, the Gulf Cove, Rotonda, and Grove City areas of Englewood. Some of the financial assistance offered includes help with prescription medications, free food, rent, electric and water, and referrals to non-profits. Sarasota County Florida families living in poverty or those facing a crisis can apply for free holiday assistance programs. There are a few different options.
- During Christmas, there are free toys, gifts, clothing vouchers, and food boxes.
- Easter Baskets may contain food and side items.
- Free Thanksgiving meals and turkeys are provided by local charities.

Free basic needs – Clothing banks can provide low income families free items such as school supplies, Christmas assistance, furniture and general clothing. Work or school clothes may be offered. A focus of many of these Sarasota County agencies is on supporting children and the elderly. Some centers may even have information on financial assistance programs or government benefits. Multiple SVDP churches are located in the county, They include Saint. Peter and Paul, Church of the Incarnation, Epiphany Cathedral and others. Sarasota Housing Authority, or SHA, can direct families to low income apartments or public housing. They administer solutions such as section 8. Or residents can get referrals to services such as landlord – tenant mediation, grants for expenses such as security deposits, and more. ABCs of Avoiding Foreclosure – This is another non-profit community service organization that is strongly dedicated to delivering professional consumer credit education, debt management plans, confidential counseling, and mortgage help programs to all segments of the community and homeowners in the area regardless of their ability to pay. Medical and free health care
A couple options are below. There may be medications, information on diabetes or cancer screenings, diabetes testing/insulin and other free medical or free dental care. Even learn about help for cancer bills.

Every year thousands of local families, retirees, and elderly people receive support from one of the local non-profit agencies or churches that operate free emergency food pantries or soup kitchens. Individuals can receive everything from groceries, holiday meals, Christmas food, personal hygiene supplies to clothing. Another key service from the non-profits is on offering referrals, and these are provided from on site volunteers and case managers.
It goes without saying that resources are limited. The demand for all types of assistance is extremely high. So many of the food banks in Sarasota County limit the amount of aid they will provide, and may only offer assistance on certain days or hours.
It is usually recommended to call in advance, to both learn what hours a pantry may be open, as well as to get information on any requirements that may need to be met by applicants. Also keep in mind that many of the centers may be able to help meet other needs that you may have. For example, many pantries offer clothing closets, thrift stores, holiday meals and gifts, and some may even rarely have funds to help pay expenses such as rent or utilities.
