One of the biggest mistakes we can make as a company is assuming that because a customer trusted us yesterday, they automatically trust us today. They don’t. We may have had their trust, but whether we have it right now depends on the experience we’re creating in this moment.

That’s why listening matters. That’s why details matter. That’s why every conversation, every follow-up, every product, and every service call is another opportunity to earn the privilege of serving them again.

I often talk about the idea of the “13th donut.” The first dozen might meet expectations, but it’s the unexpected extra—the thoughtful gesture, the remarkable service, the willingness to go beyond—that transforms a satisfied customer into a loyal advocate. Those are the moments people remember. Those are the stories they tell.

Let’s never become comfortable with yesterday’s reputation. Instead, let’s earn today’s trust by exceeding expectations every single time. When we consistently deliver experiences worth talking about, our customers won’t just keep coming back—they’ll invite others to join them.

Each quarter we recognize two employees for displaying our values in ways that have been identified by their peers and/or managers for going above and beyond the regular and expected demonstration on a daily basis. A while back I ordered a scoop of cookie dough ice cream at a creamery. I was excited because 1) it’s my favorite, especially if it has some chocolate chips mixed in, and 2) they were known for having great ice cream. I dug in. The flavor was there—it tasted just like cookie dough—but after several bites I realized something was missing. There weren’t any chunks of cookie dough. It was all flavor and no substance. It wasn’t exactly a lie, but it wasn’t what I had hoped for either. It left me strangely disappointed.

I’ve thought about that more than I probably should have. I don’t want my life to be like that ice cream. I hope that if someone were to dip their spoon into my life (whatever that may mean metaphorically), they’d find something real. Not polished perfection. Not carefully managed appearances. Something authentic.

The truth is, I am far from perfect. I still have plenty of rough edges, weaknesses, failures, and areas where God is continuing His work in me. But my prayer is that my growth would be honest. That my victories would come through real struggles. That my faith would be genuine, not manufactured. And that the person people see in public is the same person striving to follow Christ in private.

I love being around people like that. Ones who don’t have it all together yet in their life, but are headed in the direction of growing and maturing. They don’t just have the flavor of being real, they have the chunks to back it up (again, my metaphor may be weak here, but at least it is delicious!) Authenticity doesn’t mean having it all together. It means refusing to pretend that we do. The world has enough imitations. What it desperately needs are people who are willing to be real—people whose lives have substance beneath the surface. I want to be one of those people. I want to be around those people. The kind where one scoop just isn’t enough.
